WHEREAS: Facilities workers represented by SEIU 32BJ perform essential work throughout Tufts University as custodians, grounds workers, desk associates, and skilled tradespeople; and

WHEREAS: SEIU 32BJ and Tufts University are currently negotiating a successor collective bargaining agreement; and

WHEREAS: These workers are seeking fair wage increases, more affordable healthcare, protections for immigrant workers, and strong union benefits; and

WHEREAS: These workers are seeking fair wage increases, more affordable healthcare, protections for immigrant workers, and strong union benefits; and

WHEREAS: As a major employer in Somerville, Tufts University has an important role in promoting fair labor standards and constructive labor relations; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: That Somerville City Council stands in solidarity of the SEIU 32BJ facilities workers at Tufts University and supports their efforts to secure a fair contract; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: That the City Council respectfully urge Tufts University to reach a fair and timely agreement that provides family-sustaining wages, affordable healthcare, strong benefits, and appropriate workplace protections; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be, and hereby is, requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this Policy Order to Tufts University President Sunil Kumar, and Tufts University administrators.
