Dear Honorable Board Members:

I respectfully request that you authorize the approval of funding necessary for the renovation of Otis Playground, located at 59 Otis Street at the intersection of Otis and Dana Streets in East Somerville. The estimated cost of the park’s construction is $625,000. Funds will be provided by a $400,000 State PARC Grant and $225,000 in Federal Community Development Block Grant funding.

The City of Somerville has recently been awarded a $400,000 reimbursable Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant made available through the Commonwealth’s Division of Conservation Services to fund the renovation of Otis Playground. As a condition of PARC grant acceptance, the City must authorize all construction funding. Two other actions - acceptance of the PARC Grant and dedication of the playground to open space in perpetuity - will also be submitted.

This project will be designed in accordance with a thorough community design process. Upon acceptance of this PARC grant, may begin construction July 1, 2015. Increased green space and improved recreation facilities are city priorities and the renovation of this playground will significantly increase the quality of life for our residents. Dedication of this land to open space and recreation will ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy this playground.

Thank you for your consideration. OSPCD staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
