Dear Honorable Board of Aldermen:

In 2008, Massachusetts Executive Office of Transportation (now the Massachusetts Department of Transportation) and the City of Somerville entered into Grant #470016 for the study and design of roadway and streetscape improvement in Union Square. This contract will reach its 3-year maximum term on August 30, 2011.  The City has not completed the work from the original scope of the contract at the Board of Aldermen’s request so that the City may work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to peer review the proposed alternatives and fine tune what will become the final roadway alignment and open space placement.   I therefore request your approval, in accordance with §2-369 of the Somerville Code, to extend Grant #470016 with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation for an additional one (1) year to August 30, 2012.
