To the Honorable Board:

Agenda Item 197772

That the Director of Traffic and Parking install a temporary speed bump along Fellsway West, by the Century Bank and the nearby school.

The present procedure to install temporary speed bumps on City streets is outlined in Section XIV of the Traffic Commission regulations.    When this process is complete a list of locations for temporary speed bumps will be compiled and the temporary speed bumps will be installed on a priority basis.

Agenda Item 197788

That the Director of Traffic and Parking replace the pop-up caution sign that has disappeared from the crosswalk at Central and Albion Streets.

The intersection of Central St and Albion St is a typical Somerville intersection.  It is not a high accident location or an unsafe intersection. A Pedestrian Impact Recovery System was installed at this intersection as a supplemental traffic control device in June of this year.  Since the installation of the first Pedestrian Impact Recovery System, as a result of loss two other additional Pedestrian Impact Recovery Systems have also been installed.   This is the fourth request for a Pedestrian Impact Recovery System at this location.

Traffic and Parking does not have sufficient Pedestrian Impact Recovery Systems in inventory to continuously replace these supplemental traffic control devices at this location.

Agenda Item 197792

That the Director of SPCD (Transportation and Infrastructure) and the Director of Traffic and Parking consider improving the intersection at Highland Road and Boston Avenue by moving the STOP sign 10 feet back and installing a pedestrian crosswalk, and report to the Ward 5 Alderman on the prospects and timeline for each.

In order to install a new crosswalk, ADA ramps must be present.  There are no ADA ramps at this location.  A new crosswalk cannot be installed at present at this location.

Traffic and Parking does not support the relocation of the Stop sign 10’ back on Highland Rd.  A Stop Line and Stop Sign should be 5’ behind a crosswalk

If this occurred a vehicle when stopped at this location could not be able to view the vehicles on the intersecting street (Boston Ave).  Vehicles on Highland Rd would have to move forward to the intersection to observe vehicles traveling on Boston Ave.  Pedestrian safety in the crosswalk would be an issue as vehicles executed this maneuver.

Agenda Item 197796

That the Director or Traffic and parking review the timing of traffic lights at Shore Drive and Mystic Avenue, consider reinstating two lanes on Shore Drive, and consider other improvements, all to improve traffic flow at this intersection.

The traffic signals at the intersection of Mystic Ave and Shore Drive are under the jurisdiction of MassDOT.  Traffic and Parking will forward the contents of this Board Item to MassDOT.

The alteration of the number of travel lanes on Shore Drive was not constructed by Traffic and Parking.  After consulting with other City Departments, this contractor has not been identified.  Due to current weather conditions reinstituting the previous lane pattern cannot occur at this time.  Traffic and Parking will observe the traffic flow at this intersection and make corrective actions to the lane configuration if required when weather conditions allow in the spring.

Agenda Item 197799

That the Commissioner of Public Works re-install the NO LEFT TURN sign at the corner of Cameron Avenue and Mead Street.

A replacement No Left Turn sign will be reinstalled a t this location.

Agenda Item 197800

That the Director of Traffic and Parking install a NO LEFT TURN sign on the corner of Broadway and Clarendon Avenue.

The City’s Traffic Commission has jurisdiction regarding this request.  This Board Order will be placed as an agenda item for the Traffic Commission’s next meeting in November.
