                     National Public Health Week in Somerville

 

City of Somerville, Massachusetts

Proclamation

 

WHEREAS the week of April 4-10, 2011 is National Public Health Week, and the theme is Safety is No Accident:  Live Injury-Free; and

 

WHEREAS since 1995, the American Public Health Association, through its sponsorship of National Public Health Week, has educated the public, policy-makers, and public health professionals about issues important to improving the public’s health; and,

 

WHEREAS preventing serious injuries by promoting awareness of and proactive steps to ensure public safety is essential to the well-being of our community and communities  nationwide; and,

 

WHEREAS the financial costs of injuries account for 12 percent of annual medical care spending and total  as much as $69 billion per year; and,

 

WHEREAS the City of Somerville and the Somerville Health Department have arranged for corresponding events and educational campaigns surrounding this issue and others raised through National Public Health Week,

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE I, Joseph A. Curtatone, Mayor of the City of Somerville, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts do hereby proclaim the week of April 4 - 10, 2011 as National Public Health Week in Somerville, and call upon the people of the City of Somerville to observe this week by helping family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and leaders better understand the importance of public health to a successful health system in light of this year’s theme, “Safety is no Accident:  Live Injury Free.”
