Opposing the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court.

Official Text

WHEREAS:                     Brett Kavanaugh was credibly accused of sexual assault and misconduct by multiple women during his high school and college years, including by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who showed great courage in testifying before the United States Senate Judiciary Committee on September 27, 2018; and

 

WHEREAS:                     Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee led the American Civil Liberties Union to formally oppose his nomination, the American Bar Association to call for a re-examination of his “temperament”, and for the retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens to declare Kavanaugh unfit to be confirmed; and

 

WHEREAS:                     An FBI investigation into Dr. Blasey Ford’s allegation did not pursue additional allegations of sexual assault by other women, and also failed to pursue numerous character witnesses who came forward to publicly claim that Judge Kavanaugh has lied under oath regarding his behavior in high school and college; and

 

WHEREAS:                     Two out of every three sexual assaults go unreported, according to the Department of Justice’s 2015 National Crime Victimization Survey; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT

 

RESOLVED:                     That the Somerville Board of Aldermen is dedicated to supporting survivors of sexual assault and misconduct, and believes Dr. Blasey Ford’s testimony to be true; AND BE IT FURTHER

 

RESOLVED:                     That this Board opposes the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, and supports a full investigation into accusations of perjury committed while under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
