To the Honorable Board:
As Somerville residents who have a child who attends the West Somerville neighborhood school we have been troubled by the traffic situation around the school. We, along with other members of the school community including the school principal, have been increasingly how cars speed by the school on Powder House Boulevard, particularly during the morning rush hour when children are on the way in to school. Even the well marked crosswalk by the front of the school is often ignored by drivers and there have been a number of near misses as people have crossed Powder House.
The city should install a raised speed bump in the crosswalk to physically slow traffic on the boulevard. This would not only benefit children and faculty at the school but all pedestrians crossing at that point.
Also while there is a raised speed bump at the intersection of Raymond and Curtis Streets there is need for a crossing guard at that point as many children cross at that point, particularly during the morning hours and many cars seem to have difficulty seeing children crossing from the east side of Curtis Street.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,
David Ekbladh
