RESOLUTION REGARDING IMPACT OF LOGAN AIRPORT FLIGHT PATHS
WHEREAS, Members of the Board of Aldermen and the government of the City of Somerville have been deluged with complaints from residents with regard to the noise from flights taking off from Logan Airport since the beginning of this spring and continuing through this summer; and
WHEREAS, Many times the operation of Runway 33L directs each and every plane departing from Logan Airport to fly directly over the City of Somerville, sometimes beginning before 6:00 am and running constantly until 11:30 pm; and
WHEREAS, On some occasions, this Runway 33L exclusive departure has been used for a number of days in a row, subjecting Somerville residents to the noise of hundreds of planes for days without respite; and
WHEREAS, Because of the distance from the ground over which these jets fly, the noise generated by these planes is such that with windows open during the spring and summer, people cannot speak in a normal tone during a conversation or listen to their television or enjoy the use of their backyards; and
WHEREAS, It is unreasonable to subject people to this continuous noise from early in the morning until late in the evening, which substantially derogates from the quality of life that people expect to enjoy in their homes, community and backyards; and
WHEREAS, This Board of Aldermen wishes to convey the impacts of these flights on Massport and the FAA; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, That the Somerville Board of Aldermen requests that Massport and the FAA take measures to reduce the impact of noise on the residents of Somerville from the use of Runway 33L as described herein and asks that a copy of this Resolution be sent to Massport, the FAA, members of the Somerville state delegation and the office of Congressman Michael Capuano.
