To the Honorable City Council:

In response to #209544

That the Director of Parks and Recreation discuss the impacts, updates and usage of Founders Rink being used for indoor soccer.

The Founder’s Indoor Turf project was implemented in April of 2016. The total costs of the turf and installation was $67,015. To date the revenue for the turf rentals is $49,806. In 2016 & 2017, the indoor turf facility was open from April to mid-August.  However, in 2018 & 2019, the facility was open from May to mid-August. This delayed opening was due to ice rental requests until early-April.

Operation of the compressor for Founder Ice Rink costs on average $8,000 a month. With the transfer to synthetic turf, we save approximately $24,000. However, removal and reinstallation of existing turf each year costs approximately $6400.

Youth vendors make up 98% of usage whereas adult vendor usage is 2%. However, adult vendors pay the full rental fee of $100 per hour while youth vendors pay $50 per hour.

Here is how the revenue has broken down each year:

Year:

Revenue:

2016

$5,350

2017

$17,831

2018

$9,300

2019

$17,325

Total:

$49,806

The size of the indoor turf of 20 x 50 yards is more suited for youth sport practices instead of games. Adults use the facility primarily for futsal 6 vs 6 games. Additionally, in 2019, we have seen an increase for use for youth birthday parties.

Somerville youth soccer typically uses the facility as a rainy day option for practices. However, Somerville Valeo youth soccer uses the facility more for regular Spring soccer practices.

Overall, the impact of the transfer of the Founders indoor turf has been beneficial regarding using a space that would typically be closed May to mid-August.

Please contact me if I can be of further assistance.
