To the Honorable Board:
The City of Somerville has been awarded a $50,000 Brownfields Coalition Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP). These funds will support additional assessment activities at the former Kiley Barrel brownfield site that have been required by MassDEP and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Under the leadership of the Patrick/Murray Administration, MassDEP has been working actively, together with several other agencies, as part of a Brownfields Support Team (BST) to foster redevelopment of this important site in Union Square.
In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, Section 53A, which requires a vote of the Board of Aldermen for the expenditure of grants or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a county or municipality or agency thereof, I request approval to expend this grant.
Sincerely,
Joseph A. Curtatone
Mayor
