To the Honorable Board:
I respectfully request that you dedicate Dickerman Playground to open space and recreational use in perpetuity. The City of Somerville has recently had the good fortune to successfully compete for a Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant made available through the Commonwealth’s Division of Conservation Services to fund planned renovations at Dickerman Playground. As part of the grant requirements, the City must dedicate the Dickerman Playground to open space and recreational use in perpetuity. Two other Board Actions (appropriation of Dickerman Playground renovation cost and PARC grant acceptance) are also being submitted for your consideration at this time.
Dickerman Playground had a thorough community design process and, upon acceptance of this PARC grant, may begin construction July 1, 2011. As you know, excellent recreational facilities and increased green space is a City priority and the renovation of this playground will significantly increase the quality of life for our residents. Dedication of this land to open space and recreation will ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy this neighborhood gem.
