Supporting Tufts janitorial staff.

WHEREAS: The contract custodial staff at Tufts University work hard to provide a clean and safe Environment for the students, faculty and staff of Tufts University; and
WHEREAS: Tufts University is nationally recognized as an elite educational institution; and
WHEREAS: The City of Somerville provides many services to Tufts University, and Tufts plays an important role in the economic life of our City; and
WHEREAS: Tufts' investment and related accounts was at $2.1 billion in FY 2015; Tufts achieved a 7.6% investment return over the past five years; and Tufts reported operating revenue of $813 million in the year ending June 30, 2015; and
WHEREAS: 32 BJSEIU members and C&W Services are currently in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement to cover the janitorial staff at Tufts University; and
WHEREAS: The Boston metropolitan area has been identified as one of the areas where income inequality is at its highest across the country; and
WHEREAS: Institutions like Tufts University who benefit from community resources have a higher responsibility to provide good jobs in those communities; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED: That this Board of Aldermen recognizes the importance of fair wages, fulltime work, quality affordable health insurance, and dignified workloads in the work place, which allows workers to provide for their families and invest in the local community; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED: That this Board of Aldermen affirms that all workers in Somerville deserve and need stable, good-quality jobs; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED: That this Board of Aldermen strongly urges Tufts University to take all necessary steps to ensure that these jobs continue to be good jobs for the men and women who work tirelessly to keep the campus running.
