To the Honorable Board:
The City of Somerville has been awarded an additional grant in the amount $400,000 from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to build upon the current Brownfield Community Revolving Loan Fund. In 2009, the City loaned/granted $423,000 to two local projects and, as a result, the prior round of BCRLF funds have been fully utilized. This new grant, which can be used as a loan to developers or as a sub-grant, will be a vital part of the City’s Brownfield Program going forward and will help redevelop brownfield sites for public benefit and economic development, city-wide.
In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, Section 53A, which requires a vote of the Board of Aldermen for the expenditure of grants or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a county or municipality or agency thereof, I request approval to expend this grant.
Sincerely,
Joseph A. Curtatone
Mayor
