Recognizing the Police Officers participating in the first year of the STEPS program.

WHEREAS:                     The Somerville Police Department, the City of Somerville, and the Somerville Public Schools have jointly developed a program to build strong and trusting relationships between the youth of our city and law enforcement personnel; and

 

WHEREAS:                     Through this partnership, knows as STEPS, (Students & Teachers Engage Public Safety), 5 Somerville Police Officers have been assigned to serve as mentors to sixth grade students in each of the city’s public schools; and

                     

WHEREAS:                     Over 250 school visits were conducted during the 2015-2016 school year by the officers participating in this program; and

 

WHEREAS:                     The STEPS program endeavors to open up the lines of communication and provide a better understanding of the hopes, challenges and goals of our youth while affording the officers, by their example, the opportunity to have a positive impact on students’ lives; and

 

WHEREAS:                     Each of these officers has shown a desire to give back to our community by committing to remaining with their assigned class through its graduation from high school in 2022; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

 

RESOLVED:                     That the Somerville Board of Aldermen hereby recognizes Somerville Police Chief David Fallon and Somerville Police Officers Stephen Jones, Yvon Jean-Jacques, Jr., Paul Beckford, Walter Collette and Mark Pulli for their participation in and dedication to this program.
