Official Text

To the Honorable Board:

I respectfully request that you authorize the approval of funding necessary for the renovation of Hoyt Sullivan Playground, located on Central Street between Pembroke Street and the railroad corridor. Funds will be provided by a $400,000 State PARC Grant, $245,161 in Federal Community Development Block Grant funding, and additional funding provided through Community Preservation Act, pending approval of the Community Preservation Committee.

The City of Somerville has recently been awarded a $400,000 reimbursable Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) grant made available through the Commonwealth’s Division of Conservation Services to fund the renovation of Hoyt Sullivan Playground.  As a condition of PARC grant acceptance, the City must authorize all construction funding. Two other Board Actions (acceptance of the PARC Grant and dedication of the playground to open space in perpetuity) are also being submitted for your consideration at this time.

Hoyt Sullivan Playground is undergoing a thorough community design process and, upon acceptance of this PARC grant, construction is planned to begin in July of 2016.  Increased green space and improved recreation facilities are city priorities and the renovation of this playground will significantly increase the quality of life for residents now and for future generations.

Thank you for your consideration. OSPCD staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
