To the Honorable Board:

I respectfully request that your Honorable Board extend, in accordance with §2-369 of the Somerville Code, contract #09-047 Howard/Stein-Hudson, Inc. for an additional one (1) year to August 30, 2012.

In 2008, Howard/Stein-Hudson, Inc. and the City of Somerville entered into contract #09-047 for the study and design of roadway and streetscape improvement in Union Square. This contract will reach its 3-year maximum term on September 1, 2011.  The Vendor has not completed the work from the original scope of the contract at the City’s request so that it may work with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to peer review the proposed alternatives and fine tune what will become the final roadway alignment and open space placement.  

Furthermore, the contract was recently amended to expand the current scope of work to include additional and critical sewer connection and utility surveying required to take the next steps in the planning of this area.
