To the Honorable Board:

I’m writing in support of a robust expansion of the Community Path bikeway along the Green Line extension. As a resident of Somerville for over ten years, and someone who commutes nearly the full length of the city from the East Somerville line to Porter Square, we are still badly in need of improvements for cyclists. There were times when the majority of my commuting was by bicycle. But in 2016 two different cyclists were killed along the path of my commute (Inman Square and Porter Square), both apparently following the proper rules and laws.

As chairman of the board of the Somerville Chamber of Commerce, I can also say that businesses and potential employers are eager to come to a city bicycling commuters. The technology firms that would be invaluable to our city want to hire educated Millennials who are often keen cycling. Connecting our Community Path to the rest of Boston’s bike paths would be a boon this and to the safety of our city residents.

I encourage you include a robust, separated, safe cycle way along the Green Line extension.

Thank you,

Rod Laurenz
