To the Honorable Board:

The Planning Division of the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) has prepared the attached Annual Report for Calendar Year 2010 for acceptance by the Board of Aldermen (BOA).

This is the third Annual Report produced by the Planning Division in recent years. The purpose of the Annual Report is to document the Planning Division’s efforts and achievements in current planning (cases), long range planning (zoning changes), and process improvements.

Calendar Year 2010 has been a dynamic year for the Planning Division: several highly anticipated development projects completed zoning review, critical changes were made to the Zoning Ordinance, and a number of clarifying changes were made to the administrative processes to the division. Details on these accomplishments are contained in the report.

Under “Next Steps”, the report outlines permit streamlining efforts that are proposed and ways to make the Somerville Zoning Ordinance better balance the goals of protecting the community and promoting development.

I request that the BOA accept this report.  Planning staff will be available to answer any questions you may have concerning this report.
