To the Honorable City Council:
The Legislative Matters Committee requested that DPW Director of Operations Eric Weisman compile an aggregate report for the committee of available information regarding DPW's implementation of the Ordinance to Safeguard Vulnerable Road Users. Director Weisman reviewed available records related to DPW’s implementation of this Ordinance/inspection requests and found the following:
At the request of DPW and the Procurement Department, in July, 2020 an email address for vendor vehicle inspections was created: fleetinspections@somervillema.gov <mailto:fleetinspections@somervillema.gov>. This email address was added to procurement documents. Since that time, there have been 2 requests for inspections, sent on the following dates:
• 3/2/21
• 5/12/21
We are currently following up with the vendors that sent the requests in an attempt to resolve them.
Additionally, a 12/11/20 email from a prospective vendor was forwarded to DPW asking about the process for requesting a waiver. The vendor was referred to the Highway Superintendent at the time to request a waiver via email. It is not clear that a waiver was ever officially requested, however.
As discussed with the Committee, the Administration will be reviewing the Ordinance and submitting an updated program proposal along with proposed changes to the Ordinance.
