Official Text

To the Honorable Board:

The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is offering a tremendous opportunity for Somerville to develop a new Central Library, capable of meeting the needs of our current residents and future generations of residents.  I respectfully request that you: 1) approve a preliminary architectural design of a new Central Library; 2) authorize the Somerville Library Board of Trustees to submit an application to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) for the Massachusetts Public Library Construction Program (MPLCP) grant; and, 3) approve, contingent upon the receipt of such State funds and appropriation of matching funds, the acceptance and expenditure of said funds.

As the BOA is aware, the existing Central Library has not been upgraded in 35 years and is sadly inadequate to meet contemporary library needs.  The current condition profoundly impacts the quality of library service for our residents.  The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) is offering a grant that, if selected, will provide Somerville an unequaled funding opportunity - approximately 40% of construction costs.  The MPLCP grant will allow us to create a new library facility to meet the demands of modern-day users and be flexible enough to respond to our residents’ evolving needs.

A new Central Library will serve as the civic and cultural beacon of Somerville.  The new facility will have increased capacity, offer a wider collection, include high-tech services, and provide a landmark building designed with inviting rooms for children, youth, and adults.  It will also have new programming and materials to support Somerville’s diverse community.  \

In addition, by locating in Union Square, the new library will be significantly more accessible to residents by transit once the Green Line station is constructed.  The library will also benefit the City as a whole, serving as a catalyst for development and generating unprecedented economic activity in the area.

If selected, Somerville could receive nearly $13 million. The City would be required to match these funds and I will work with Members of the Board and the appropriate Committees to secure these matching funds.

Respectfully,

Joseph A. Curatone, Mayor
