Proclamation
WHEREAS: the United States has long been shaped and strengthened by immigrants who arrived here to build their lives; and
WHEREAS: Haitians have a rich history rooted in resilience, courage, and the world’s first successful Black-led independence movement, which has inspired global struggles for freedom and justice; and
WHEREAS: Haitian immigrants and Haitian Americans have contributed significantly to the cultural, economic, educational, and civic life of communities across the nation; and
WHEREAS: the City of Somerville is home to a vibrant and growing Haitian community whose members contribute as workers, entrepreneurs, students, artists, caregivers, community leaders, and more; and
WHEREAS: Haitian culture has enriched Somerville through its language, music, art, food, faith traditions, and strong commitment to family and community; and
WHEREAS: recognizing Haitian Heritage Month promotes understanding, inclusion, and appreciation of the Haitian community’s contributions and lived experiences; and
WHEREAS: Haitian Heritage Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the strength, resilience, and achievements of Haitians while reaffirming the City’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and belonging for all residents; and
WHEREAS: this month recognizes the history, contributions, and strength of Haitians in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE be it known to all those present that the Mayor of the City of Somerville respectfully proclaims
May 2026 to be Haitian American Heritage Month.
