Traffic and Parking Director responding to various Board Orders.

To the Honorable Board:

 

{The following are responses by Traffic and Parking to various B.O.A. Orders of September 23, 2010.)

 

1.                     #190112 - That the Director of Traffic and Parking enforce the parking restrictions on Walter Terrace especially with regard to permit parking.

 

                     Traffic and Parking will continue to increase enforce all parking restrictions on Walter Terrace.

 

2.                     #190117 - That the Director of Transportation and the Director of Traffic and parking provide this Board with information regarding two MassDOT bridge reconstruction projects and potential negative impacts: Craigie St Drawbridge at Leverett Circle and the O’Brien Highway and the Longfellow Bridge Project.

                        

                     In addition to a verbal summary provided by Acting SPD Chief Cabral, Traffic and Parking will prepare and submit, under separate cover, the requested report.  In addition, Traffic and Parking will continue to work with members of the State Delegation to mitigate the impacts of construction on Somerville.

 

3.                     #190119 - That the Director of Traffic and Parking install Permit Parking Only signs on Shore Drive.

 

                     Traffic and Parking will be pursuing a comprehensive review of the Shore Drive area to include the location of the Parking enforcement signs, location of crosswalks across Shore Drive and a plan of action to prevent cut thru traffic.

 

4.                     #190120 - That the Director of Traffic and parking install temporary signage indicating Two Hour Parking Except by Permit on the odd side of Somerville Ave between Laurel and Central Streets.

 

                     The Somerville Ave Reconstruction Project is still ongoing.  As such, Somerville Ave is under the jurisdiction of MassDOT.  Upon completion of this project and the return of Somerville Ave to the jurisdiction of the City of Somerville, all proper parking restrictions will be enforced on Somerville Ave.

 

5.                     #190128 - That the Director of Traffic and Parking install Stop signs on Kidder Ave at Josephine Ave.

 

                     The installation of Stop signs is governed by the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  The MUTCD is a Federal, State and City standard.  The MUTCD is specific on how and where Stop signs can be installed.  Per the MUTCD, Stops signs are installed to establish intersection control for vehicles approaching an intersection from different streets.  In this instance there are no vehicles approaching the intersection from different streets.  A Stop sign cannot be installed at this location according to the MUTCD standards, which governs sign placement in Somerville and in cities and towns across the State of Massachusetts.

 

6.                     # 190122 - That the Director of Traffic and Parking conduct a study on the number of vehicles entering Bonair Street from Dana Street and recomment a solution to prevent these vehicles from utilizing this as a cut through.

 

                     Traffic and Parking is in the process of allocating personnel and equipment to conduct this study.  After assembling the necessary resources a study will be conducted.  Upon completion of the study and review of the data recommendations will be submitted to the Board for review.
