Honoring Tom Bent and Mike Calder for their commitment to hire graduates of the High School's Career and Technical Education Electrical Program.

WHEREAS, Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) representing all of Eastern Massachusetts, the Somerville High School Career and Technical Education’s Electrical Department, and Bent Electrical Contractors, Inc., joined together in 2010 to create a partnership to benefit Somerville graduates; and
WHEREAS, Local 103 has committed to accept into its apprenticeship program, the top two graduating electrical students; and
WHEREAS, Bent Electrical Contractors, Inc. has committed to hiring those students, who were selected based on their academic achievements, work ethics and determination; and
WHEREAS, Participation in the 5-year apprenticeship program requires 10,000 hours of on-the-job training and assists those students in moving on to the next step in their professional development to become licensed electricians, putting them on a path to a long and prosperous career in this ever-changing industry; and
WHEREAS, Local 103 and Bent Electrical Contractors, Inc. have provided these opportunities each year since 2010 to assist Somerville students to reach and realize their professional goals; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED, That the Somerville Board of Aldermen, and the Mayor, extend their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Tom Bent and Mike Calder for their community partnership to provide continuing educational opportunities, ensuring that our students may secure a lifelong career path with solid wages and benefits.
