To the Honorable Board:

Agenda Item 201474

That the Director of Traffic and Parking and Traffic Engineer meet with the neighbors and Ward 5 Alderman to determine what can be done to improve the safety of the intersection of Morrison and Boston Avenues.

A meeting was held on 5/19/16

Agenda Item 201477

That the Traffic Engineer and the Chief of Police suggest traffic calming measures for High, Sterling, Fairfax and Gordon Streets and Woods Avenue and report back to the Ward 7 Alderman.

In order to determine the level of traffic calming required for a particular street, it should be determined the vehicle speeds on the street. It is recommended that the Somerville Police Department deploy Speed Monitoring Boards to the above reference streets and record vehicle speeds for a one week period at each location. Then from this data determine the 50%, 85% and 95% speed percentile for each street. After this data is determined, traffic calming initiatives can be discussed.

Agenda Item 201478

That the Director of Traffic and Parking line paint the intersection Broadway and Alewife Brook Parkway, at the corner of Stop and Shop.

The intersection of Broadway and Alewife Brook Parkway is under the jurisdiction of MassDOT. This agency is responsible for pavement markings at this intersection.

Agenda Item 201487

That the Director of Traffic and Parking devise a strategy to more forcefully implement the DO NOT ENTER restriction on Perkins Street, by the Boston line.

A site review was conducted of Perkins St in the vicinity of Mt Pleasant St. On Perkins St at Parker St (in Boston) there is a Do Not Enter sign with a One Way Blade. Approximately 100’ further west on Perkins St at the Somerville c/l there are Do Not Enter signs on both sides of the street. All of the Do Not Enter signs and the One Way Blade are properly positioned and clearly visible.

Any vehicles traveling westbound on Perkins St are clearly and knowingly violating the Do Not Enter provisions of these signs. Enforcement is the key to preventing this type of wrong way travel.

Please contact me with any questions.
