To the Honorable City Council:

On behalf of the Attorney General’s Office, we thank you for sharing this news and a copy of the City Council’s resolution [#211343] with us. We strongly support the City of Somerville’s efforts to outline steps to achieve a better future for its female workforce.

We would like to provide information about the work our office is doing in this space, and offer to be a resource moving forward.

In Massachusetts, all contracts by a state agency or state-assisted contracts for design, construction, reconstruction, installation, demolition, maintenance or repair must contain workforce participation goals for minorities and women. The AG’s Fair Labor Division (FLD) is working to raise awareness among awarding authorities about this legal requirement through outreach, trainings and presentations, and guidance materials in collaboration with the Policy Group on Tradeswoman Issues. FLD would be happy to connect on this issue as it may relate to the steps outlined in the resolution.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if our office can be of any assistance.

Best,

Joela Qose, Senior Policy Coordinator

Policy & Government Division
