To the Honorable Board:

The Health & Human Services Department of the City of Somerville has been awarded a MA Department of Public Grant - Massachusetts Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative Grant in the amount of $100,000.00.

The Massachusetts Substance Abuse Prevention Collaborative grant will build existing partnerships between Somerville, Cambridge, Everett and Arlington, so they can share resources, and coordinate their activities in order to create a regional approach to preventing underage drinking and other drug use in their respective cities.  Led by the Somerville Office of Prevention which is within the Somerville Health and Human Services Department, the four-community “Cluster” will bring together Somerville, Cambridge, Everett and Arlington’s existing coalitions and networks to support a collaborative planning process and implementation of a Cluster-wide Strategic Planning Framework (SPF).

In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, section 53A which requires a vote of the Board of Alderman for the expenditure of grants or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a County or Municipality or agency thereof, I request approval to accept the initial payment of this grant which totals $100,000.00.

Respectfully submitted

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
