To the Honorable Board:

Board Order #191359:

That the Director of Traffic and Parking install an additional DO NOT ENTER sign at Wallace and Holland Streets.

Traffic and Parking supports this proposed sign installation.  However, the Department of Public Works is responsible for sign installation.  As a result, T&P has forwarded the Board Order as a work in the 311 system to Public Works to be completed.

Board Order #191368:

That the Director of Traffic and Parking advise the Ward 2 Alderman of the cost and feasibility of installing concurrent leading pedestrian interval (LPI) signaling at certain problematic intersections in Ward 2.

Traffic and Parking has some concerns about the LPI concept.  Specifically, the concept allows pedestrians to have a walk signal indicator for a few seconds and then vehicles are allowed to start their turning movements while pedestrians remain in the crosswalk.  We prefer for pedestrians to cross intersections during an exclusive pedestrian phase (all traffic signals are red) at the end of the traffic signal cycle.

However, there is support for LPI among various pedestrian groups, and some studies have shown that LPI will result in less jay-walking at signalized intersections.  Since sophisticated signal controllers are required to implement LPI, the only controllers that could accommodate this are the recently installed controllers along Somerville Ave.
