To the Honorable Board:

The City of Somerville has been awarded a Hazardous Substance Assessment Grant of $200,000 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This assessment award is a vital part of the City’s Brownfield Program which aims to redevelop brownfield sites for public benefit and economic development city-wide.  The Economic Development Division of the Office of Strategic Planning & Community Development (OSPCD) will use these funds to assess City-owned parcels or privately owned parcels that the City is interested in acquiring.

This is a reimbursable grant, but no local match is required.

In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, Section 53A, which requires a vote of the Board of Aldermen for the expenditure of grants or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a county or municipality or agency thereof, I request approval to expend this grant.

Respectfully submitted,
