To the Honorable Board:

I was shocked to hear some members of Union United oppose a new zoning ordinance unless the developer signs an agreement with them. Somerville is a big community with a large and diverse population. Union United does not speak for me. I’m excited, not only about the Green Line extension and the accessibility that comes with updated transit, but also about the potential for Union Square to become a more vibrant place to live.

I am ready to see more jobs in my city, more affordable housing and more innovation. The “gentrification” that so many speakers seemed to denounce is already happening and putting our heads in the sand will not address the problem. Development does not have to force people out of their homes and it does not have to make affordable housing unaffordable. Having a larger vision for the future of Somerville is what is needed at this crucial time. Closing a master developer and making them incorporate the community’s needs was the right approach.

Adopting zoning that funds the Green Line Stop creates affordable housing and develops lab and office space will increase taxes, drive patrons to local business and transform old lots (like auto repair lots) scattered throughout the community. Thank you for taking the time to consider my point of view.

Sincerely,

Lauren Mucci
