To Ald. Ballantyne:

Attached is the circulating letter from Mr. Neraj Tuli asking residents to reject the existing zoning which instructs no more than four unrelated residents in any apartment as well as a few other points.

I would again like to convey my support for the existing zoning as it aims to protect neighbors and renters from predatory landlords who jam as many bodies into their properties as possible to collect per room rent. The city has little enough parking and too many sanitation issues to allow this type of slum landlording any foothold. I feel Mr. Tuli is insincere in his allegation that he owns a 6 bedroom home and that this zoning limits his right to income. I have lived here, with a licensed builder father, for over 40 years, and I have never, ever seen a residential apartment in Somerville constructed with this many bedrooms. What I have seen is the use of every available space being converted to bedroom like areas to increase profit for landlords acting like rooming houses. Not fair to the renters or their neighbors.

Feel free to share my input with your colleagues if it comes up for discussion.

Sincerely,

Kimberly Rego
