To the Honorable Board:

Agenda Item 198946

That the Director of Traffic and Parking consider changing the traffic flow on Medford Street, from Pearl Street to McGrath Highway, to flow with the rush hour traffic.

Traffic and Parking has reviewed the various traffic flow scenarios for one way traffic on Medford St while Green Line Extension construction activity is ongoing.  The safest traffic flow pattern is the present pattern of westbound traffic flow on Medford St from Walnut St to Pearl St.

Reversing traffic flow patterns daily is not only labor and time intensive but would cause confusion for drivers.   The probability of any accident would increase if this option would be implemented.

Traffic and Parking does not recommend any change to the current traffic pattern on Medford St.

Agenda Item 198958

That the Director of Traffic and Parking paint appropriate roadway markings at the speed bump on Shore Drive to alert drivers as they approach it.

When weather permits (late May/early June) Traffic and Parking will paint appropriate pavement markings at the traffic calming table on Shore Drive at Putnam St.

Agenda Item 198959

That the Traffic Engineer examine the rotary at Grand Union Blvd. and River Road for safety and install appropriate signage.

Traffic and Parking has reviewed the rotary at the above specified location.  The pavement markings at this rotary are in compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).  However two of the three approaches to this rotary do not have the required Yield sign.  These Yield signs will be installed by Traffic and Parking staff when jurisdiction is confirmed that the roadway has been accepted by the City of Somerville

Agenda Item 198964

That the Commissioner of Public Works or the Director of Traffic and Parking install a bump out at the corner of Columbus and Bonner Avenues.

Bump outs are constructed and installed by the Department of Public Works

Agenda Item 199057

That the Director of Traffic and Parking paint the lane arrows at the traffic light on Holland Street, in Teele Square.

The lane arrows at the above intersection will be placed on the priority list for pavement markings installation.

Agenda Item 199060

That the Director of Traffic and Parking repair and install solar flashing lights on the pedestrian crossing sign at the crosswalk of Washington and Hawkins Streets.

Traffic and Parking will install this sign.

Agenda Item 199061

That the Director of Traffic and Parking paint the crosswalk at Joseph Street and Lincoln Parkway and install flashing lights at the STOP sign there.

Traffic and Parking will install this sign.  The repainting of the above mentioned crosswalk will be placed on a priority list for repainting.

Agenda Item 199062

That the Director of Traffic and Parking install signage on Park Street alerting motorists of children crossing at 44 Park Street.

A Caution Children sign will be installed at this location.

Agenda Item 199065

That the Traffic Engineer review the pedestrian walkway on Somerville Avenue at the RITE AID, and make safety improvements.

The crosswalk at this location is in compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for both pavement markings and signs.  The MUTCD is the federal, state  and City standard for sign and pavement markings.  No additional actions are required.  It should be noted that there are traffic signals in the vicinity at Park St and Somerville Ave and Beech St and Somerville Ave with active pedestrian buttons.

Please contact me with any questions.
