WHEREAS: Tufts University is not paying their Tufts Dining workers during Summer 2021, nor giving workers the option to collect unemployment benefits during that period; and
WHEREAS: Tufts University plans on employing only a small group of Dining staff during the Summer of 2021, when the dining staff has been fully employed in past summers; and
WHEREAS: The final day of employment for the Spring 2021 academic semester is Friday, May 10th for most Dining workers, and the Covid-19 pandemic has made finding employment for the Summer extremely difficult; and
WHEREAS: The Tufts administration has not communicated with Dining workers whether it will allow those workers who will not be retained over the Summer to collect unemployment benefits; and
WHEREAS: The Tufts administration has repeatedly ignored demands from students and requests from public officials to provide Dining workers with information surrounding their ability to collect summer unemployment benefits; NOW THEREFORE BE IT
RESOLVED: That the Somerville City Council supports the Tufts Labor Coalition and Tufts students advocacy to push the Tufts University administration to allow Tufts Dining workers who are not being employed during Summer 2021 to collect unemployment during that period and to inform workers about their options surrounding summer unemployment claims by Friday, May 21st, 2021; AND BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED: That the City Clerk send a copy of this Resolution to President Anthony Monaco, Tufts University.
