WHEREAS,                      Over three hundred workers at the Shaw's distribution center have been on strike for six weeks; andWHEREAS,                      Striking workers and their families lost their health benefits on April 1; andWHEREAS,                      In these difficult economic times, loss of pay and health benefits puts a particularly immense strain on working families; andWHEREAS,                      Workers are already struggling under the weight of rising health care costs; andWHEREAS,                      The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has a longstanding commitment to ensuring affordable healthcare for our citizens; andWHEREAS,                      It is in the best interest of Massachusetts to strive to keep good jobs in our state; andWHEREAS,                                           Collective bargaining is a time-tested method for resolving labor conflicts; NOW THEREFORE BE ITRESOLVED,                     That the Somerville Board of Aldermen encourages both parties to return to the bargaining table and arrive at a fair and reasonable contract in an expedient manner.
