WHEREAS: The City of Somerville has a vibrant jazz scene with many of the music’s most respected artists calling Somerville home, venues hosting world-class performances, a unique mix of young musicians and internationally recognized artists living, teaching and performing here; and “Joe’s Jazz & Blues Festival” an annual tradition; and WHEREAS: The non-profit organization JazzBoston brings together representatives from every corner of the city’s diverse jazz community who are united in their dedication to keeping Somerville’s thriving jazz scene growing; and WHEREAS: JazzBoston will lead the effort to build audiences for jazz by serving for the fifth consecutive year as coordinator and promoter of Jazz Week, a major celebration of jazz in the Greater Boston area to be held April 28 to May 8, 2011, which will include a wide array of collaboratively planned, independently produced performances and educational events in all kinds of venues throughout the City of Somerville and its environs; and WHEREAS: Jazz Week has been scheduled to tie into the Smithsonian Institution's national observance of April as Jazz Month and to honor the spirit of Duke Ellington, born on April 29; now therefore be it RESOLVED: That the Mayor of Somerville go on record proclaiming April 28 to May 8, 2011 as Jazz Week in Somerville.
