Official Text

The following are responses to two B.O.A. Orders from March 11, 2010:Ordered, that the Director of Traffic and Parking repair the damaged right turn directional sign at 58 Day Street, before the intersection of Elm Street:       This Board Order should be forwarded to the DPW. The DPW is responsible for the repair of damaged signs.Ordered, that the Director of Traffic and parking repaint the yellow line in front of 75 Myrtle St.:      Traffic and Parking can only install pavement markings under the appropriate weather conditions.  These conditions do not usually occur until early - mid March.   At that time Traffic and Parking will evaluate all pavement markings and based on budgetary constraints establish a priority list to install pavement markings.   Traffic and Parking has reviewed Board Oder #30 from 3/11/10:       Traffic and Parking has reviewed the curb cut/driveway to 252 Medford St/Brady Towers.  There are traffic signals located at Medford St/Highland Ave and at Medford St/McGrath Highway.  The traffic signals at Medford St/Highland Ave are under the jurisdiction of the City of Somerville.  The traffic signals at Medford St/McGrath Highway are under the jurisdiction of MassDOT.  Due to these traffic signals being under the jurisdiction of two separate authorities, these two traffic signals can not be synchronized. In addition there is a Double Yellow Center Line (DYCL) on Medford St in the median opposite the curb cut at 252 Medford St.  Per state regulations this pavement marking is a traffic control devise which precludes vehicles to cross over or initiate turning movements.  Vehicles exiting the driveway from 252 Medford St are not allowed to make a left turn.  Vehicles traveling west bound on Medford St are not allowed to make a left turn into the curb cut.  The curb cut for 252 Medford St allows only right turn in and right turn out.Residents of 252 Medford St can safely exit and enter this curb cut.  The Somerville Police Department accident records indicate that his location over the past seventeen years averages only 2 accidents per year.  This location is considered a low accident location. The traffic signals at Highland Ave/Medford St were and are designed to regulate only the flow of traffic on/at Highland Ave/Medford St.  The aforementioned curb cut/driveway is approximately 150? east of this traffic signal.  There are no actions which Traffic and Parking can implement to these traffic signals which would have any impact on the proper vehicle movements into or exiting the driveway to 252 Medford St.  Any actions to these traffic signals to attempt to influence the vehicles movements at the driveway at 252 Medford St would cause a severe adverse affect  rippling down the Highland Ave and Medford St corridors to negatively impact the intersection of Highland Ave/Walnut St, Highland Ave/School St, Medford St/Highland Ave and Medford St/Walnut St.
