To the Honorable Board:

Traffic and Parking recently attended a MassDOT meeting regarding the upcoming I-93 bridge replacement program.  Per your request to be kept apprised of any new information, please see below:

J.F.White/Kiewit was selected as the joint venture firm.  The plans submitted differ slightly from the RFP proposed by MassDOT.  The basic differences are in the sequence of structures to be removed and replaced and also the method of removing the Webster St, Medford structure.

The altering sequence in the removing structures will result in at least one additional weekend of detour traffic utilizing the Mystic Ave EB -Lombardi Way -Mystic Ave WB detour due to on ramp closures to I-93.  This detour will have the greatest impact on Somerville due to its vicinity to the Mt Vernon/Broadway/Lombardi Way intersection and the Mystic Ave/Assembly Sq Drive/ Lombardi Way intersection.

Instead of “picking up” and replacing the Webster St structure, this structure will be demolished by traditional construction means, i.e. “shear scissors” and “hoe ramming” with concrete and other materials falling on local Medford streets below.

MassDOT has committed to the following:

o                     Initially staffing police details as requested by SPD officials along Broadway.  This staffing level will be reviewed as the project proceeds.

o                     Reviewing, inventorying and repairing traffic signals/traffic controllers along Broadway (length of corridor to be determined) as required.  T&P will be meeting with the Traffic Consultants for the joint venture within the next couple of weeks to discuss specifics.

o                     Conducting Traffic Studies in Somerville to determine traffic impacts on local streets as a result of detours.  This item T&P will also discuss with the firm’s Traffic Consultants.

o                     Truck routes to/from the Webster St area regarding the hauling of debris from this location.  Per MassDOT, local Somerville streets will not be used for this activity.

Please contact me if you have any questions on the above or we can be of further assistance.
