To the Honorable Board:

I am pleased to inform you that the Metropolitan Area Planning Council has been awarded $291,000.00 from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security to support the Metro Mayors Shannon Community Safety Initiative.  Due to collaborative efforts the Somerville Police Department has been awarded $12,213.00.

These funds will be used in a manner consistent with the strategies and objectives outlined in the application.  The primary objective recognizes the challenges associated with tackling gang violence, youth violence and substance abuse.  Included in the strategy will be the continued participation with the Metropolitan Gang Task Force.  This funding will allow increased opportunities for joint patrols, intelligence sharing and participation in weekly meetings that focus on improving the quality of life in our community. The Somerville Police Department will also use these funds for suppression initiatives including overtime for gang officers, patrol officers and the school resource officer to curtail youth violence and gang issues.

In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, Section 53A, which requires a vote of the Board of Aldermen for the expenditure of grants, or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a County or Municipality or agency thereof, I request that you accept this grant for final approval.

Thank you for consideration of this matter.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
