Proclamation
WHEREAS: Disability Pride Month recognizes the historic signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990; and
WHEREAS: Persons with disabilities are valued members of the Somerville community, bringing a diverse set of experiences, perspectives, and talents that strengthen our city; and
WHEREAS: Disability Pride Month is a celebration of community, advocacy, and the simple truth that everyone should be able to participate fully in civic life; and
WHEREAS: Disability Pride acknowledges that accessibility is not just a legal requirement, but part of how we build a city where every person can move through the community with dignity, independence, and belonging; and
WHEREAS: We recognize and honor important milestones such as the 1999 Supreme Court ruling Olmstead v. L.C., which affirmed that unjustified segregation of persons with disabilities is a form of discrimination under the ADA; and
WHEREAS: We honor the individuals, families, advocates, caregivers, educators, organizations, and community partners who continue the important work of advancing accessibility for all; and
WHEREAS: The City of Somerville is committed to advancing equity-centered work that fosters a welcoming and inclusive community, with City services, programs, and policies that support residents with disabilities.
Now, therefore, be it known to all those present that the Mayor of the City of Somerville respectfully PROCLAIMS July 2026 to be Disability Pride Month.
