National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
City of Somerville, Massachusetts
Proclamation
Whereas, childhood obesity is one of the most pressing public health concerns
of our time; and
Whereas, elected officials are stewards of our children’s health and future; and
Whereas, cities and towns play a critical role in increasing opportunities for
healthy eating and active living for children; and
Whereas, local strategies to prevent and reduce childhood obesity result
in better health and quality of life for all residents; and
Whereas, urban communities are disproportionately impacted by childhood
obesity; and
Whereas, the City of Somerville has been working to reverse the trend of
childhood obesity in our community for almost a decade; and
Whereas, the City has been nationally recognized for our efforts to prevent and
reduce childhood obesity through the Shape Up Somerville initiative; and
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved, that I, Joseph Curtatone, Mayor of the City of Somerville, Massachusetts, support President Barack Obama’s designation of September as National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative, and invite all citizens to join me in celebrating National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month by participating in a city-wide walk to school day and celebration on Walk/Ride Day, Friday, September 24, 2010.
NOW THEREFORE, I, Joseph A. Curtatone, Mayor of the City of Somerville, do hereby proclaim September to be:
National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this 23rd day of September, in the year two thousand and ten,
JOSEPH A. CURTATONE, MAYOR
