Dear Honorable Board Members:
I respectfully request that you approve the dedication of the land known as Otis Playground, at 59 Otis Street, the intersection of Otis and Dana Streets, to open space and recreational use in perpetuity.
The City of Somerville has been awarded a Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC), a grant made available through the Commonwealth’s Division of Conservation Services to fund renovation of the playground. As part of the grant requirements, the City must dedicate the playground to open space and recreational use in perpetuity in accordance with MGL Article 97 of the amendments to the Constitution of the Commonwealth and be subject to the provisions of MGL Chapter 45, Section 3.
Two other Board Actions - appropriation of Otis Playground construction costs and PARC grant acceptance - will be submitted for your consideration.
This project will be designed in accordance with a thorough community design process. Upon acceptance of this PARC grant, may begin construction July 1, 2015. Increased green space and improved recreation facilities are city priorities and the renovation of this playground will significantly increase the quality of life for our residents. Dedication of this land to open space and recreation will ensure that future generations will continue to enjoy this playground.
Thank you for your consideration. OSPCD staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. A copy of the boundary survey of the property is attached.
Respectfully submitted,
Joseph A. Curtatone
Mayor
