Conveying the Final Inspectional Services Division Organizational Review.

To the Honorable Board:
I would like to hereby offer the Board of Aldermen a copy of the final Inspectional Services Division (ISD) Organizational Review for your review and consideration. This full organizational and operational review of ISD was initiated by the City of Somerville as part of a permit streamlining effort. The attached report includes 101 recommendations for improving the Inspectional Services Division.
This study was performed by Zucker Systems of San Diego, CA. Zucker Systems is a consulting service that specializes in the analysis of planning, building and community development functions and related departments. They have worked with government clients for the past 28 years and are the leader in this specialized field.
Somerville benefits today from the many committed and talented staff that work at ISD, but we all recognize that by using data, technology, and benchmarking to evaluate the existing operation, we can identify ways to improve customer service and better utilize the City’s limited resources. I believe that implementation of the recommendations from the Zucker Systems report will help Somerville create and maintain a state of the industry Inspectional Services Division and I look forward to working with you on implementation.
