To the Honorable City Council:

 

The Director of Human Resources and the Chief of Police respectfully convey to this Council updates on civil service hiring practices for entry level police officers. Effective March 5, 2025, the City of Somerville Police Department has opted into a hybrid, or alternative, pathway provided by the MA Human Resources Division (HRD) for hiring of entry level police officer positions through a locally sourced pool of candidates.

 

A memo, the memorandum of agreement (MOA), the alternative pathway hiring policy, a process comparison, and a local register guide provided by HRD are attached.

 

Appropriate staff will be available to answer any questions you may have.
