That this Board stands opposed to the establishment of the Somerville Progressive Charter School.

Official Text

WHEREAS,                      There is a proposal to create a new charter school in the City of Somerville called the Somerville Progressive Charter School (SPCS); and

 

WHEREAS,                      The SPCS seeks to enroll 425 students, targeting students in the City of Somerville; and

 

WHEREAS,                      If all 425 students come from Somerville, approximately $4.78 million per year would be deducted from the City’s budget; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Such a reduction in state aid would have a deleterious effect on the City of Somerville, the Somerville Public Schools and the students served by the Somerville Public Schools; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Such a reduction in the budget of the Somerville Public Schools could result in the closing of a school and elimination or reduction in key programs such as the SMILE pre-school program, SCALE adult education program, music and arts; and

 

WHEREAS,                      Whether or not to approve this new charter school will be decided by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, a state body; NOW THEREFORE BE IT

 

RESOLVED,                     That the Board of Aldermen of the City of Somerville hereby stands united in opposition to the establishment of the Somerville Progressive Charter School; AND BE IT FURTHER

 

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution shall be filed with the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education at the public hearing on December 14th, 2011.
