Official Text

To the Honorable Board:

In accordance with M.G.L. Chapter 44, Section 53A, which requires a vote of the Board of Aldermen for the expenditure of grants or gifts from the federal government and from a charitable foundation, private corporation, or an individual, or from the Commonwealth, a County or Municipality or agency thereof, I respectfully request your approval to accept a grant from the Department of Justice for funding under the FY10 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program in the amount of $39,343.00.

The primary goal of the grant is to support the Somerville Police Department's purchase of equipment and supplies that will improve our criminal investigation capabilities and greatly increase the safety of our officers in the line of duty. This grant will allow us to purchase a Surveillance KEL Kit that will enable officers to remotely listen and monitor activities happening during undercover operations. In the process, it will substantially improve the Department's ability to utilize its undercover capabilities and plan safe, efficient and effective operations.

The funding also provides the ability purchase Ballistic Helmets and Riot Face Shields. These purchases respond to the increase in social unrest caused by rapid economic and social changes and the impact of the current recession.

This equipment will ensure that every active duty police officer has the safety equipment needed to protect City residents and property.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
