To the Honorable Board:

I respectfully request that you approve an authorization to seek funding and enter into any understandings or assurances with the Commonwealth to receive funds to assist in the estimated construction costs of $1.1 million for renovations of North Street Veterans Playground.

The North Street Veterans Playground is currently in design and scheduled for construction in 2012. Excellent recreation facilities and increased green space is a city priority and the renovation of this playground will significantly increase the quality of life for our residents. This application for $500,000 represents the maximum amount of funds allowed through the program. A local contribution of $281,250 represents the required matching funds that will be provided by the City during FY2012 and 2013. I will work with members of the Board and appropriate committees to secure these funds in addition to the $300,000 in CDBG monies that have already been allocated.

This application is for a PARC grant (formerly Urban Self-Help Grant) to the Massachusetts Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs, through its Division of Conservation Services. The PARC grant application is due on July 14th, 2011 to qualify for the FY2012 grant round. Since this is reimbursement funding, the City hereby assures the State that we have the funds to finance the renovation of North Street Veterans playground and will provide the State with the appropriate documentation for reimbursement.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully submitted,

Joseph A. Curtatone

Mayor
