To the Honorable Board of Aldermen:

On June 3, 2010, the Planning Board recommended adoption of an amendment to the Somerville Zoning Ordinance to address parking requirements for Large Retail and Service Clusters in CCD and TOD zoning districts.  The Board of Alderman was unable to act on the proposed amendment within the ninety-five (95) day period for action and it therefore expired on August 30, 2010.  As a result, staff from the Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) is resubmitting the proposed amendment for action by the Board of Alderman.

The proposed ordinance increases the parking required for the Large Retail and Service Cluster (establishments of 10,000 square feet or more) beyond what is required for the Medium Retail and Service Cluster (1,500 square feet to 9,999 square feet).  This will take into account the unique nature of larger floor plate uses while also recognizing Somerville’s commitment to a commercial environment that is mixed use and pedestrian-friendly in nature.

Staff from OSPCD will be available if you have any questions regarding these materials.
