To the Honorable City Council:

The Mayor respectfully requests that this Council approve the following appropriation:

"That the City of Somerville appropriate the amount of One Million, Three Hundred Thousand ($1,300,000) Dollars for the purpose of paying costs of a feasibility study to renovate or construct a new building to serve the needs of the Winter Hill Community Innovation School currently located at 115 Sycamore Street and that such new construction may also accommodate the enrollment needs of the Benjamin G. Brown School currently located at 201 Willow Avenue, including the payment of all costs incidental or related thereto, and for which City of Somerville may be eligible for a grant from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (“MSBA”), said amount to be expended under the direction of the Department of Infrastructure & Asset Management in consultation with a School Building Committee. To meet this appropriation, the Mayor, with the approval of the City Council, is authorized to utilize the Facility Renovation Stabilization Fund. The City acknowledges that the MSBA’s grant program is a non-entitlement, discretionary program based on need, as determined by the MSBA, and any costs the City incurs in excess of any grant approved by and received from the MSBA shall be the sole responsibility of the City, and that the amount of Stabilization Funds authorized pursuant to this vote shall be reduced by any grant amount set forth in the Feasibility Study Agreement that may be executed between the City and the MSBA."

Appropriate staff will be available to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.

Respectfully Submitted,

Katjana Ballantyne, Mayor
